Agriculture Barriers Article - Laken Meister

10 Barriers Mexico Faces

Mexico was forced to halt migrants on the southern border or tariff would rise by 5% monthly starting on May 2019. Right now, all trades are good, but in the through 2019 there were a few times that it could have gone bad. Agriculture and rural funding was cut 20% in the 2019 government budget, which this let to farmers in Mexico protesting and even blocked off the highway. The Mexico corn crop genetic diversity is eroding, they found some flawed so it could be the end of maize from Mexico. The weather is a big factor if farmers will have a good year or not, a few years ago in 2017 a tornado really hurt farmers and made it a bit harder for they that year. Some of the farm hands aren’t paid well or at all, they even planned an escape of one farm that was bad. It isn’t like that all of the farms in Mexico though. The terrain in Mexico is a variety of high and rugged mountains, low coastal plains, high plateaus, and then desert land. Because Mexico is one of the larger maize producers they have pests that are making it difficult for farmers so they might need to bring in a pest to attack the pests going after maize so it doesn’t hurt the production of that. Most of the soil type in Mexico is Leptosol but the least covered/used is Nitosol. The article I found states that ‘Mexico is an emerging market heavy-weight’ meaning they are economies or developing country with rapidly industrializing free market or mixed economy.

News Article Summary

In the article I read I learned about history in Mexico with both crop production and crop history. A fact I learned was that corn is a native crop to Mexico and first grown. Also vanilla is another one of the country’s native plants. Mexico is a Latin American food producer, the eight-largest agriculture crop producer. Which makes the country the third-largest exporter in Latin America.

Additional Information

Additional facts about Mexico are it is the follows Brazil and Argentina for being the third-largest country. One of the chief economic and political forces in latin America. The country remains economically fragile, despite strong ties with the United States and Canada in the North American Free Trade Agreement. In spite of challenges Mexico faces as a developing country.

Relevant to Class

All of this is relevant to class because it all had to do with what we are talking about. The main thing for this assignment was to find 10 agricultural barriers in what country we choose. So I thought 10 for Mexico, they are tariffs, trade, financial aid, crop diversity, weather, labor, terrain, predators/pests, soil quality, and market.
