My facility is located just south of Canton South Dakota. My land is somewhere around 200 acres. My business is a sow farm business where we breed hogs and sell them to make profit. We only have one breed of hog so it’s easier on us. We do all natural breeding instead of using stimulants or other methods of getting them to mate. We raise the hogs from infants to adults and sell them when they are of age.
For our housing we have the house where I live, two shelters outside for the hogs to be out during the day, and two different pens so we can separate males and females. The hog’s shelter is three-sided and protects them from sun, wind, and rain. The shelters are about 10 acres each so they have plenty of room to move about. The size of the pens are 20 by 16 feet enough to fit both a male and female in. We only bring the hogs into the pens if we want them to breed otherwise they stay outside. The minimum size of the pens can be 16 by 16 feet for two hogs. But we give them a little more room so they feel comfier and it usually results in more efficient breeding.
The way we transfer our hogs to the pens is by using fencing to make a walkway for them. Since the shelter and the barn aren’t far away it is pretty easy to get them from point A to B. We keep all of the food for the hogs in the barn so it stays dry. We also store all the fencing to move the hogs in the barn along with normal fencing in case they break the fences.
Since the hogs are outside we don’t need to clean their shelter so they will just be standing on dirt. But in the pens the floors will be concrete with hay on top of it so it is comfier. So when we need to clean out the pens we just throw out the hay and lay new hay down. The outside pen is a life saver because it saves us a lot of time from having to clean every day and make sure it’s in good shape.
I don’t need to have any employees because I could do it myself but I hire two people to come and help with the work load. My office would be in my house so if my employees would need something or if there was a problem they would know where I’m located to inform me.
My parking lot wouldn’t be very big but I would have a big open place so that a semi could fit in there and turn around. It would be all flat dirt because it’s easier and less expensive then pouring a giant concrete slab.
